Four generations of the Spector family have been remodeling homes in the Northeast and beyond for more than half a century. They're not fancy folks (if you want fancy, hire a Main Line contractor), but Mr. Contractor calls back right away, uses primo building materials, prices fairly, and guarantees every last nail.

Mr. Contractor, Inc., 2634 Frankford Avenue, 215-423-5525, www.mistercontractor.com INSIDER TIP Mr. Contractor's Ken Spector says they're least busy between January and April, when most folks are paying off post-holiday bills and haven't yet gotten their tax refunds.

Article from Philadelphia Daily News
(Summer of 1999)

The best wood to use in the Philadelphia climate is cedar and redwood, according to Ken Spector, owner of Mr. Contractor, Incorporated on Frankford Avenue, in Philadelphia. "Being natural woods, they hold up outside and have a longer lifespan," he said.

Beware of pressure-treated standard pine--the kind you can easily buy in home improvement stores. Though cheaper, "in time the sun absorbs some of the chemicals in the wood, causing it to split and crack," Spector said.

Own a typical city rowhouse? "Adding a 16-by-14 foot deck made from pressure-treated pine could cost between $6,000 and $10,000," Spector said.

A similar deck made of cedar could cost between $7,000 and $11,000 and redwood could cost between $8,000 and $12,000. A deck of the same dimensions made of Trex "would cost somewhere between cedar and redwood." Whatever wood you choose, make sure you use galvanized screws and nails that won't rust. Find out what the city code requires.

Whatever your project -- even if it's just washing and resealing the deck you already have, do it soon. Why waste fabulous weather?

Dear Lonnie,

This is long overdue, but we wanted to thank you and everyone at Mr. Contractor for the excellent work you did on our kitchen remodel and backyard deck. As you may remember, we considered different approaches for a year before meeting with you and hiring Mr. Contractor to work on our kitchen. It was absolutely the right decision. Joe and Victor, and everyone who worked on the lighting, electric, plumbing and painting were professional and efficient, and the quality of the work far exceeded our expectations. We recently put our house on the market, and in the first few weeks we had more inquiries about who had worked on the kitchen than offers on the house!

Although we are relocating to Washington, DC and will no be able to continue enjoying the kitchen, we would be happy to recommend Mr. Contractor to future customers. Please feel free to share this letter and pass on our contact information if you need a reference.

Sincerely,
Fred and Liz O'Brien

Just a note to tell you I am very satisfied with the work you guys did on my wall. Your men were very nice, very helpful and very polite.

I would recommend your service to anyone.

Thank you

Dear Barry and everyone else at Mr. Contractor,

Thank you so much for all the work you've done on my house. The result are fantastic and, you were an absolute pleasure to work with. I will certainly call you for any other jobs.

All the best,
Jamie Taylor

Dear Steve,

I am writing to tell you what a "SUPERB" job that Joe, Eddie and Dave did on my windows.

As you know, I was very nervous about hiring a contractor to do the capping job on the eleven windows and barge board. The contractor that I hired prior to you made a total mess on my windows and lost a lot of money in the process. As a consequence, it made me sick to my stomach.

You assured me that you could do the job right, but I wasn't completely convinced. Your guys came to my house on time and work steadily until the job was completed. They were quick and professional. After the job was done, I was really thrilled to see that the guys did such a beautiful job. In addition, the caulking was neat.

I am so glad that I called Mr. Contractor to do this job and I will let people know who to call if they need a contractor.

Sincerely,
Arleen F. Evans

To who it may concern,

During November and December of 1997 my spouse and I had our kitchen completely remodeled. Our prime contractor was Mr. Contractor, which arranged the electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work. The work involved about two weeks of almost constant attention with at least two workers in the house most of those days. The quality of the work perfomed along with the building material used gave us a new kitchen that we will both be proud of for years to come. Any homeowner who is considering remodeling their existing kitchen within budget for working people and desiring quality workmanship could no do any better that to have the work performed by Mr. Contractor.

Sincerely Yours
Randall M Kehrt

Dear Lonnie,

Thank you for the professional manner in which you handled the misunderstanding concerning my patio doors.

As both a Lawyer and a Real estate broker I have dealt with a lot of different contractors. Joe and John make a great team. They work cleanly, quickly and do a fantastic job. I would not hesitate to have them in my home again.

Again I am glad we were able to clear up my problem and hope we can do work together in the future.

Sincerely
Jonathan S. Stavin

Dear Lonnie,
